I'm realizing that a large contingent of Oppo regulars live here in Austin, TX (myself included).
Not that it means anything, or that there's some grand correlation between Austin and brown station wagons... Though I have a family member who owns a shop here in Austin that works on a lot of Miatas (he's done a couple V8 conversions). He told me that Austin has one of the highest percentages of Miatas in the nation. I can't verify that with facts, but I have certainly seen a lot of them on the road here. So maybe there's some natural correlation between Austin's Miata population and the Oppositelock community.
Anyway, that being said, I'm just surprised to see Austin mentioned so often here.

cars last a long time in Texas and there's a large young population. Not to mention the healthy used market. Not saying there's not a lot of auppos, I'm sure there are. I'm in San Marcos, but I've been to Austin hundreds if times, brother lived there.

Good points, and now that I think about it, I'm sure COTA's recent birth has a bit to do with it as well.
Awesome name, btw.

I was at the COTA this weekend for my 21st!
Also, the name isn't just a hollow pun! I've been into lockpicking way longer than I've been into cars

One of these days, dammit, I'm going to get down to COTA and see a race. I don't care if it's F1, LeMans, MotoGP... I was so excited they creating the track, I even tried to get hired by the land development firms that were working on it, just to be part of it. Alas, life hasn't worked out that way, so I'm still trying...
On a smaller note, the family member i mentioned in the original post has a deal with Harris Hill Raceway, where he brings out some of this fast toys and people can pay for a day's worth of high-speed driving instruction and a handful of laps. I missed the event a few months ago, I'm hoping he has another one soon.
I also hope I get the family discount.

Ugh, that blows man!
Are you familiar with Brianne Corn? She's a rally driver from this area, and she's got a little plot of land with a dirt track in Maxwell, TX, and she opens it up for people to come out and tear shit up. Mostly just for fun, though sometimes they do have competitions (all friendly, no prizes, to my knowledge). But the track is short, and I think they only run single laps for time. Would something like that be up your alley? It almost always "run what ya brung", and I think she even rents helmets. She gets a lot of stock WRX's and Civics out there, and people just love it.

Other cars that are wildly common in Austin and really nowhere else:
Mini (Coopers and Countryman)
Fiat 500
Smart ForTwo (not just the Car2Go's)
Porsche (mainly Boxsters with entry-level 911s)
Tesla
Toyota Prius
Not bad guys, not bad.

Yes, LOTS of Teslas, which is really odd, considering that Texas was one of the anti-Tesla states... I guess Austin is truly an island.
Also, lots of Chevy Volts.

Truely is it the People's Republic of Austin. So many Teslas and other plug-ins. I even saw a RAV4 EV on 183 the other week.
Really? I think I see more C-Max than Volt. Then again, I'm not really looking for the Chevy...

Yeah, I've seen at least 5 different ones, and they were all on either 183, MoPac, or 71 West.

I know :) That's why I mentioned it, she's a sophomore at the uni there, midfielder at the soccer team.
Oh.. deep sea fishing is VERY tempting, but I've got a monthly income of like $2k US now, so I ain't going anywhere in a hurry.

I don't know if she's FROM Texas, but she definitely lives here in Austin. I see her out at COTA quite a lot. I don't know if she got journo creds for the F1 race though... I didn't see her. There were a TON of people in the media center though, so it wouldn't be impossible to miss her.
